Slow-simmered in a rich tomato sauce, this classic Eastern European dish is a perfect balance of tradition, nutrition, and heartiness. It is an ideal meal for family gatherings and yields delicious leftovers.

Ingredients

Scale

1 large green cabbage
1.5 lbs ground beef (85/15 lean)
2 cups cooked white rice
28 oz tomato sauce
1 medium onion, finely diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp dried dill
1 tsp sweet paprika

Instructions

Place the whole head of cabbage in a large pot of boiling water and carefully remove leaves as they soften.
Trim the thick center rib from each cabbage leaf.
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, dried dill, and paprika until well combined.
Place two tablespoons of the meat mixture onto the center of each leaf.
Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll tightly.
Layer the cabbage rolls in a deep pot and pour the tomato sauce over them.
Simmer on low heat for 90 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded.

Notes

Ensure your tomato sauce is free of added pork or alcohol ingredients. These rolls reheat beautifully and often taste even better the next day. You can freeze the assembled rolls before cooking for a quick future meal.
