These crispy air fryer onion straws offer a delightful, golden crunch that rivals traditional deep-fried versions with a fraction of the oil. By soaking paper-thin yellow onion slices in tangy buttermilk and coating them in a seasoned flour and cornstarch blend, you achieve a restaurant-quality snack or topping. Perfect for elevating burgers, steaks, or salads, this quick and easy recipe uses circulating hot air to create a satisfying, savory treat that is light, addictive, and ready in under thirty minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

2 large yellow onions, sliced paper-thin
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
Cooking spray (avocado or olive oil)

Instructions

Slice the onions into extremely thin strips using a mandoline or a very sharp knife for uniform cooking.
Soak the onion slices in a bowl of buttermilk for at least ten minutes to soften their bite and improve flour adhesion.
In a separate shallow dish, combine the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, and salt, whisking until thoroughly mixed.
Remove onions from the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off, and dredge them in the seasoned flour mixture until lightly coated.
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
Arrange the coated onions in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd, and spray lightly with cooking oil.
Cook for 10 minutes, tossing halfway through, until the onions are golden brown and crispy.

Notes

For best results, work in small batches so the air can circulate properly around each straw. If you do not have buttermilk, make a substitute by mixing 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar. Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes to restore crispiness.
